Proof School is a math-oriented school in San Francisco's Financial District that opened in Fall 2015 with 45 children in grades 6-10, but plans to expand to serving 250 students in grades 6-12. It brings its inspiration from math circles. Its goal is to give a holistic education for students who love math. ==Academics== Proof School hires teachers who have exceptional math abilities (usually with Ph.Ds), and its curriculum emphasizes working on and communicating about interesting mathematical problems. Class sizes have a 15:1 student:teacher ratio. Students are not sorted by age or grade. Pupils are introduced to math research projects. Students take standard academic subjects in the morning and learn math for 2.5 hours in the afternoon. These standard subjects include a required curriculum of four years of English, two years of history, science, foreign language (including Latin and American Sign Language), and one year of arts. The academic year is broken down into 5 blocks of math instruction that immerses the entire school in a single topic for 6 weeks each. These blocks include problem solving, algebra, geometry, analysis, and number theory. Programming and computer science are paired along with other subjects. The school offers computer science courses in Python, Data Structures, App Design, and Robotics. The school uses blended learning methods (using technology in the classroom) and inquiry-based learning practices. It will share its resources (including hosting math talks and events) in an open-source way with the public. The school has WASC accreditation and will not offer Advanced Placement courses.
